    Hi all, today’s question is your take on the battle between streaming providers. Given growth from Disney Plus, Apple TV and Amazon Prime alongside disappointing subscriber growth for Netflix, which company do you think will prevail?

    Disney has somehow managed to get their hand on so many key productions (Marvel, Lucasfilm, 21st Century Fox) that it is definitely worth it to get Disney+ as your favourite movie is likely on it. Their position is further strengthened by the fact that Marvel has many movies and tv-shows in line with their Phase Four productions.

    I also did not agree with Netflix cancelling popular contemporary shows such as Patriot Act (which had such a loyal following – although there are some rumours that it was cancelled due to getting on the wrong side of certain countries). WIth contemporary/weekly shows, you definitely can get recurring views just by investing in one show and I don’t agree with it from a business point of view.

    With the rest, I do feel there might be subscription fatigue and a likely winner from this might be Youtube because I think you can just buy the movies you want to watch – old school haha.

    Being a loyal Netflix customer I want to keep believing in Netflix. Although Netflix will keep spending a significant amount on new content, I see the future of Netflix as eventually merging with another content provider (if the regulators allow this) to pool their resources together and get a larger market share. Another possible avenue is diversification – strengthening its existing gaming service, which will see more games added in 2022 or investing into the future of interactive entertainment, another player for the Metaverse?

    However, at the moment it looks like Amazon Prime Video will prevail. Amazon has very deep pockets, so it can keep investing in quality content and existing customers are unlikely to cancel their Prime memberships if they are dissatisfied with the content as there are many benefits to an Amazon membership.

    Great points! It will be interesting to see the potential Metaverse involvement, which seems to be getting a lot of attention recently. What do you think that would look like?

    Also, I totally agree with your point on consumers not cancelling Prime subscriptions because of the Video content. Most people use it primarily for other benefits like the next day delivery, not the streaming or the audiobooks.

    I think Netflix is in for a tough time. Apple TV, Disney+ and Amazon Prime have a significant data advantage over Netflix, able to use data insights to choose content viewers will prefer. Netflix will lose the rights to certain TV shows which have drawn subscribers to its platform such as Modern Family, Homeland and Prison Break. Additionally, part of the reason for reduced subscriber growth was explained by the delay of the new season of Bridgerton, showing how Netflix relies upon upon big hits and new content. Whereas, Disney+ can draw upon extensive back catalogues of family favourites, STAR WARS and MARVEL. The main battle will be between Amazon Prime and Disney+, with Prime moving ahead due to the other bundled services Prime membership provides to customers.

    Netflix has been very slow in recognising the opportunity for gaming on their platform, they are investing far less in this area than their rivals. I think it has already been left behind and others will traverse the metaverse before it does.
